What made it work.
Real-time environmental scanning that assesses workspace conditions, not task lists. Haptic nudging that redirects attention without adding another notification to ignore. Historical analytics that show the habit forming over time.
And when users no longer need Toggle? That is the ultimate win. After all, it is meant to be deleted.
The problem: why we need a smarter productivity solution.
Every productivity tool manages your time. None of them manage your room.
For college students aged 18 to 25, especially those with ADHD symptoms, staying productive in disorganized environments can feel like swimming against the tide. Distractions pile up, stress levels rise, and existing tools fail to offer meaningful, personalised solutions.
The productivity struggle is real.
Disorganized spaces = overwhelmed mind. Traditional productivity tools don't adapt to real-world distractions. ADHD users need personalized, real-time interventions, not generic advice.
Opportunity.
We saw a gap in the market for a real-time, adaptive tool that helps neurodivergent individuals take control of their environment, not just their task lists.
The logic behind Toggle: how we designed a smarter solution.

104 people, and one finding nobody was building for.
Our research painted a vivid picture of college life for students with ADHD symptoms. Through interviews, surveys, and user observations, we uncovered recurring pain points: cluttered desks, constant distractions, and difficulty maintaining focus.

The finding that set the direction.
Existing solutions focus on time management, not environmental optimization. Every competitor we reviewed helped you plan your day. None of them helped you fix the room you were trying to work in.
The decisions that shaped Toggle.

How do you interrupt someone who is already easy to interrupt?
The tension: A nudge has to land, but every notification competes with the distractions we are trying to remove.
What shipped: Haptic feedback as the primary channel. A pulse you feel and nobody else notices. Voice and visual cues sit behind it, on request.
What we gave up: The richer information a screen could carry, in exchange for not becoming another distraction.
Minimal interface, or a feature-rich one?
The tension: More features mean more capability. For ADHD users, more features mean more visual clutter to filter.
What shipped: A minimalist UI with high contrast and clean design, deliberately sparse.
What we gave up: Depth on the surface, in exchange for a screen that does not itself become a distraction.
Gamify the habit, or trust the user?
The tension: Gamification builds habits, and it can also become another loop to get stuck in, which is the exact failure mode we were designing against.
What shipped: Light gamification tied to commitment tracking, designed to fall away as the habit forms.
Why it matters: Toggle succeeds when it is no longer needed, which is an unusual thing to design toward.
How Toggle works: sense, nudge, track.

A loop that runs in the background of your day.
Sense the room, not the task list. Integrated cameras scan the workspace and identify what is actually pulling focus away. Nudge without interrupting. A haptic pulse redirects attention. No banner, no sound, no new thing to read. Track until it is no longer needed. Historical analytics show the habit forming over time.
